Writing SamplesHere are a few samples, snippets, and musing of some writing I have done in my ofttimes. While unfortunately not as major, or fulltime, of a focus for me currently, writing is definitely a passion that allows me to build, create, and share worlds in a different medium.
One major element of my writing that is not fully listed here, yet, is a Dungeons and Dragons campaign that I run. I have been a Dungeon Master for a group of friends for the last 4-5 years in a world of my own creation, the world of Estea. I have homebrewed most of Estea, using some a backbone of the base D&D lore, but making my own world within their lore for my friends to explore. I will add excerpts of the lore of the world, or story bits of the players and their (mis)adventures from time to time. Estea - Stories from a Homebrew D&D WorldThe Severance - The breaking of Iunum and fall of the Renewed Tree. The pilgrimage of the Renewed Tree had gone on for as long as the people could remember. It was always the same. The four were selected, branded with the mark of the tree, had their memory cleansed, and set along the path with nothing but the robes on their back and the pulling sensation of the destination they needed to reach. What was to happen once the pilgrims reached the end of their journey was for the pilgrims and whatever awaits them at the end, to know alone. Except, the final pilgrimage failed and millions suffered the consequences.
What little information has been recovered of the final days of the southern continent once known as Iunum (eye-oo-noom) is fragmented and scarce. Travel into and throughout the Desolate Lands is deadly at the best of times, but now with the so-called cult of Asmodeus using that dead and diseased land as their home, it's nearly impossible. The best bit of information recovered was from the final stop made by the pilgrims in the town of Edgewatch. From what we gathered, the ship the pilgrims were on was hit by a massive storm and shipwrecked. They fought their way through the goblin infested forest and eventually found themselves in Edgewatch. The town had it's own trouble that the pilgrims took upon themselves to clear first. Details are hazy, but a specter, or banshee of some sort had been taking citizens of the town from time to time and rather than sit back and let the citizens be terrified that each night might have been their turn, they took it upon themselves to fight back and rid the town of the haunting creature. Here is an excerpt of a journal entry that was found in the ruins of Edgewatch. "The wailing at night as the apparition stalks the street were deafening. I felt little Rollo wince at each shriek and shiver in fear. I shushed him quietly and tried to assure him that the four of the Renewed Tree were going to..."
Some of the papers are burned and damaged here. Continuing later. "...destroyed, but the Lareths can rebuild. In the morning the town gathered in celebration of the pilgrims, but it was a bit subdued with he sight of the burnt in handprints all over the house that once belonged to the Berins, the house the pilgrims were staying in for the night." More damage to the journal, but the final entries are as follow. "It has been a month or two since the four pilgrims were last seen. The town completed the statues to them and mark them as heroes for saving the town from the creature now known as a Banshee. There has been a weird tension in the air these last few days. Almost as if the world is holding it's breath, but no one knows why. We awoke to a glow appearing on the horizon, the direction the pilgrims headed when they left. No one has any answers as to what it may be, so with wary eye, we continue our day to day. " "The glow has gotten brighter and there is a noise, an almost low wailing, that can be heard in the distance. Some have started to flee the town, fearful of the light and sound, but others have stayed, claiming it to be nothing more than "fearmongering nonsense". We plan on leaving in a few days once we can get things in order. I fear for the pilgrims and wonder what if something may have befallen them. Nothing more we can do but..." The journal ends here. Unfortunately we know little more than what the journal shares. But these entries allowed us to shed some new light on the Severance. We know that the pilgrims of the Renewed Tree had a hand in the destruction. Whether it was something they had a hand in directly or a failure of stopping is still unknown and may never be known. The journal had mentioned a "house belonging to the Berins" that had burnt in hand prints all over it. Fragments of this house was discovered in our journey to the ruins of Edgewatch. The structure, what little still stood, still had burnt in handprints all over. The house was more intact than most of the other houses within the town, whether some magic, or curse, held it together. Standing near the house there was a feeling of dread that washed over our party and unease quickly spread. It was as if the Banshee would reappear at anytime. We strive to learn more of the Severance whenever we can, if only to prevent it from happening again. Millions of lives, an entire continent was lost, gone forever into what is now known as the Abyssal Sea. The land not lost to the sea is nothing but burnt, sandy ash, with little to no plant life and being stalked by the cult, and otherworldly creatures alike.
Though it has yet to be established what role, if any, the pilgrims had in the Severance. That didn't stop the church of Renewed Tree from feeling the brunt of the blame. Their temples were razed, priests and clerics chased out of towns, or worse, strung up and left as penance. This spelled doom for the faith of the Renewed Tree and their following disappeared just as quickly. The mark of the Tree became a mark of shame and anyone smart enough quickly distanced themselves from the faith. Rumors have it that the faith of the Renewed Tree is still out there, cult like, in the shadows and underground but none of these rumors have yet to have been uncovered.
